On Tuesday November 18, Carlton ventured to Geelong for their first-round match in this season's Primary Edge Cup. The result met expectations. The scoreline (above) was...well... perhaps somewhat beyond expectations. As can be seen Evan, Tim and Jeremy 'enjoyed the drive home'. We now know that this is a record score for Premier Cricket's Twenty20 competition. But we note that 'The Geelong Advertiser' is also reporting this score as a new "World Record". Simply amazing! Simply brilliant!

But having posted the score, we know that these totals are there to be chased (South Africa v Australia - Johannesburg). The fact that didn't happen must, in some part at least, be the product of some great bowling and great fielding. So we record the fact that the following bowling figures were recorded by Carlton.

Nick Austin
3.4 - 0 - 3/38
Tim Knox
2 - 0 - 2/25
Tom Smyth
2 - 0 - 2/9
Tim Buszard
4 - 0 - 1/39
Tim Welsford
3 - 0 - 1/16

Congratulations....

The last few weeks have provided several opportunities to offer "congratualtions" around Carlton.

The most recent announcements concern Jake Hancock and Tom Smyth (pictured right) who have each been selected as part of the Victorian Under 17 team to play in this years National Championships in Perth, WA in January.

In addition the good news continued for Jake (now 17 years old) with his elevation to the First Eleven in Round 7 for Season 2008/09. Jake becomes "Cap No." 603 and follows his eleveation to the Second Eleven as an opener where he has scored two centuries this season, the last being 158* in Round 6. The only person to have been younger when he first played in Carlton's First Eleven was the late John Scholes.  i

Round 5 saw the last of the One-Day games that opened Season 2008/09. It also saw Nick Ross become player 602 to play with Carlton's First Eleven. Nick's prominence in making runs in the Second Eleven bought just reward and his valuable 19* suggests more appearances with the Firsts are not far away. The photo left show President John Douglas congratulating Nick on his selection.

Finally, this round of good news began when Jon Holland (right) became the most recent Carlton player to get the call-up to State selection. Since then Jon has maintained his place with the Bushrangers in both the One-day and Four-Day forms of State cricket.

Off-Season Highlights

Since the conclusion of last season, there have been a number of announcements regarding Carlton players. These include the following.

Following a season of frustration due to injury, Jon Holland was awarded a scholarship to the Australian Cricket Centre of Excellence. Following the doctor's all-clear he headed to Brisbane where, with other members of his squad, Jon has been hard at work honing his skills. Initially the hard work culminated in selection to the Australian Institute of Sport Eleven. As a member of this group Jon next headed to Darwin where he performed very creditably,  firstly in a three match series against the Bangladesh One Day team and then in a warm-up match with the Australian team before the two National teams commenced their series. More recent news of Jon's progress is presented above.

Another group of Carlton Cricketers who have been busy over the off-season were a group of five young cricketers who were invited to join Cricket Victori'a High Performance Squad. The participants in this program were:-
